Import customers

Last updated July 23, 2026

Import customers when you need to add or update a large customer list from a spreadsheet.

Common uses

  • Move an existing customer list into Nexus.
  • Add contact and billing information in bulk.
  • Reuse a saved field mapping for recurring imports.
  • Validate a spreadsheet before adding its valid rows.

Before you begin

You need permission to import customers. Prepare an XLSX, XLS, or CSV file under 50 MB with column names in the first row and no empty rows or columns. Back up the source file before you begin.

Open the import

  1. Go to Customers.
  2. Click Import Customers.
  3. In Unified Import Center, make sure Customers is selected.

The import guides you through type, upload, mapping, validation, and processing.

Upload and map the file

  1. Click Continue.
  2. On Upload your file, click Download Template if you need the recommended format.
  3. Drop the spreadsheet into the upload area or choose it from your computer.
  4. Continue to Map your fields.
  5. Click Auto-Map to match familiar column names automatically.
  6. Review every mapped column, especially required fields.
  7. Choose Select target field to correct or complete a match.
  8. Optionally click Save Template to reuse the mapping later.

A mapped field connects one spreadsheet column to one Nexus customer field.

Validate and import

  1. Continue to Review and validate.
  2. Review errors and warnings by row.
  3. Correct the source file and upload it again when required information is missing.
  4. When the valid-row count is correct, click Import number Valid Rows.
  5. Wait for Import Complete!, then close the import.
  6. Return to Customers and search for several imported records to confirm names and contact details.

Locations are imported separately when the upload screen advises that location records will not be created. Follow Add and manage service locations before booking work at those sites.

What happens next

Valid customer rows become available in Customers. Review possible duplicates before staff begin using the records.

Troubleshooting

The file is rejected

Confirm it is an XLSX, XLS, or CSV file under 50 MB. Remove blank rows, merged cells, and extra header lines.

Required fields are not mapped

Return to Map your fields, choose the correct target for each required field, and validate again. Download the template if the source headings are unclear.

Some rows are skipped

Open the validation details and note each affected row. Correct missing or invalid values in the source file, then import those corrected rows.
